Helen Elizabeth Mayberry
December 8, 1922 - June 20, 2019
Helen was born December 8, 1922 to James Irvin and Elsie Rebecca (Pearl) McMullen in West Grove, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Wilmington, Delaware in 1943. She moved to Washington in 1944 to work at Hanford, where she met her husband, Marvin Mayberry, whom she married December 16, 1944. They had 3 children, Jim, Lon and Mary Margaret. She worked as a Register Nurse as she followed her lifelong- IBEW- member- husband to his numerous employment locations around the country, most notably at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Pasco (1950s- 1960s), Washington, and for the Visiting Nurses Association in Everett, WA. (1960s- 1970s). She was a member of the Washington State Nurses Association, served as President of WSNA District 15,and was one of the negotiating members for the first written employment agreement between Our Lady of Lourdes hospital and its' Registered Nurses in the early 1950s. She also served as President of IBEW 112 Women's Auxiliary. She and her husband returned to the Tri-Cities in the 1970s, and were founding members of The Manor retirement community in Kennewick, where they moved upon retirement. During retirement, they spent several years touring the country in their motorhome. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004, and moved to Marysville in 2012 to be closer to family. She lived at The Cottages at Marysville since late 2017 until her passing June 20, 2019. The family wishes to express thanks to the staff there for their care of Helen in her final years.
Helen is survived by her 3 children, Jim Mayberry, Lon Mayberry (Mary), and Mary Norris (Randy); grandson, Lars Bjerke (Ashley) and great- granddaughter Ainsley, and granddaughter Erikka Bjerke; sisters Mary Tayer of Selah and Pearl Johnson of Pennsylvania and their families.
